Two Dozen Detained by ICE in Fresno Area, Sources Say

Reports of increased immigration enforcement activity have emerged across Fresno and Madera counties, with local advocacy groups saying around two dozen people were detained over the course of two days.

According to reports cited by The Fresno Bee, the arrests were primarily connected to traffic stops and other encounters in the Fresno-area.

Reports of Increased Enforcement

The Valley Watch Network, a rapid-response group that tracks immigration arrests and assists detained individuals and their families, reported receiving multiple calls about people being detained beginning Monday.

Nora Zaragoza-Yáñez, a program manager with the organization, said the group was informed that at least a dozen people were detained Monday and another dozen Tuesday.

The United Farm Workers also reported multiple stops involving federal agents in the Fresno and Madera areas.

A UFW Foundation representative separately said that 20 people were detained by immigration officials in the Fresno area on Tuesday.

Fresno Officials Could Not Confirm Activity

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said he was not aware of any change in immigration enforcement activity in the city, while noting that this did not necessarily mean enforcement activity was not occurring.

Spokespeople for the Fresno Police Department and Fresno County Sheriff’s Office also said they could not confirm the reported immigration enforcement activity.

ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the reported arrests.

Traffic Stops and Community Reports

Several reported incidents involved people being stopped while traveling to or from work.

One Fresno man, Luis Arreguin, was reportedly detained on Oct. 1 while driving to work on Manning Avenue. His daughter told The Fresno Bee that he was later transferred to an ICE detention facility in McFarland.

Other community members reported seeing people detained after traffic stops in southwest Fresno.

Some additional reports and videos circulated on social media, although The Fresno Bee noted that it had not independently verified those sightings.

What Officials and Advocates Are Saying

The recent reports come weeks after a federal court ruling lifted an injunction involving certain warrantless arrests by Border Patrol agents, subject to conditions including whether someone is considered a flight risk.

It remains unclear whether that ruling is connected to the recent reports of immigration enforcement activity in Fresno and Madera counties.

The reports also came shortly after the Department of Homeland Security announced what it described as a nationwide public-safety surge in sanctuary cities. Fresno, however, is not a declared sanctuary city.

Immigrant-rights organizations have expressed concern about the reported enforcement activity, while officials have said they were unable to independently confirm the scope of the activity.

What Happens Next?

The reports of increased ICE activity have raised concerns among families and community organizations across the Fresno area.

At this point, the full scale and circumstances of the reported arrests remain unclear, with some incidents independently documented and others still unverified.

Fresno Politics will continue following developments as more information becomes available.
