Fresno police have denied reports of a confrontation between local officers and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a Fresno hospital following the arrest of an off-duty ICE agent on suspicion of felony assault.
According to The Fresno Bee, 32-year-old David Gonzalez was arrested Friday after allegedly assaulting a man and a woman at a Fresno residence. The agent was reportedly shot in the midsection and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Reports of a confrontation between police and ICE agents at the hospital circulated following the incident. However, Fresno police said no such confrontation occurred.
“ICE officials have been in contact with the Fresno Police Department to initiate their personnel investigation. The suspect remains in Fresno Police custody,” the department said.
Federal authorities have launched an internal investigation into the incident. The circumstances surrounding the reported hospital confrontation remain disputed, with Fresno police denying that it happened.
