Fresno is weighing longer summer hours at select libraries and parks, a move officials say would give families safe, cool places to spend time during the Valley’s punishing heat. The idea has gained traction as temperatures routinely climb well past 100 degrees.
Under discussion are extended weekday evening hours at branch libraries and additional staffing at popular parks with splash features and shade. Community groups have pushed for the change, noting that not every household has reliable air conditioning.
The main hurdle is staffing costs. City staff are studying whether existing budgets can absorb the expansion or whether a smaller pilot at a handful of sites makes more sense for this year.
