Fresno’s housing shortage is real, and meeting it will require building more homes. But growth should strengthen neighborhoods, not steamroll them. The two goals are not in conflict, despite how the debate is sometimes framed.
Thoughtful infill, a range of housing types, and good design can add units while respecting the character residents value. What breeds opposition is not housing itself so much as change imposed without listening.
City leaders should keep residents genuinely involved as they update the rules. Housing built with neighborhoods, rather than at them, is housing that lasts.
