Opinion: Local Elections Deserve More Attention Than They Get

National politics dominate the headlines, but it is local elections that decide whether your street gets repaved, how your schools are run, and how quickly help arrives in an emergency. Ironically, these are the races that draw the fewest voters.

City council members and county supervisors make decisions that touch daily life directly, yet turnout in local contests is often a fraction of what it is in presidential years. That gap hands outsized influence to a small, motivated few.

Paying attention to local candidates and measures is one of the highest-leverage things a resident can do. The ballot closest to home is often the one that matters most.
